SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA A shocking and rare act of mass violence struck Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of 10 people, including one suspected shooter, and leaving 18 others wounded.

New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed that the deadly rampage began around 6:45 p.m. local time near Campbell Parade, the main road behind the beach, during a crowded "Chanukah by the Sea" celebration being held in a nearby park.

Police officials stated that nine victims were killed by gunfire, alongside one of the men believed to be a shooter. A second alleged shooter is reportedly in critical condition in custody. NSW Police later confirmed that there were "no more active shooters" but urged the public to continue to avoid the area and take shelter as a major operation continued late into the night.

The co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Alex Ryvchin, stated that the organization believes the attack was "very deliberate and very targeted" against the Jewish community gathered to celebrate the first night of the Hanukkah festival.

Chaos and Casualties

The mass shooting—a phenomenon rarely seen in Australia due to its strict gun laws—sent immediate panic through the popular tourist spot. Videos circulated online showing beachgoers screaming and scattering, running over barricades and grabbing their children as dozens of shots rang out.

NSW Ambulance services reported that 18 people were transported to multiple local hospitals, including two police officers. The injured were treated at the scene for gunshot wounds before being rushed to medical facilities.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the scenes in Bondi "shocking and distressing."

"Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected," the Prime Minister said.

The incident marks one of the most significant mass casualty events in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which led to the country's comprehensive firearm reforms. Police have sealed off the area and are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the tragedy.
